What Is the G1 Test in Ontario?

The G1 test is the first step toward getting your Ontario driver’s licence. It’s a written knowledge test based on the Ontario Driver’s Handbook and includes two main sections:

Ontario G1 Licence Requirements

To apply for your G1 licence, you must:

  1. Be at least 16 years old.

  2. Pass a vision test.

  3. Pass the G1 written knowledge test.

  4. Present acceptable ID showing your legal name, date of birth, and signature.

After getting your G1, you’ll enter Level One of Ontario’s Graduated Licensing System (GLS). You must hold your G1 licence for at least 12 months (or 8 months with an approved driver’s course) before taking the G2 road test.
