What Is the G1 Test?

  • The G1 test is a written knowledge test that marks the first step in Ontario’s graduated licensing system. It evaluates your knowledge of:
  • Road rules and regulations

  • You must pass the G1 test before you can move on to the G2 road test.

Who Administers the G1 Test?

The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) is responsible for the G1 test. The test is taken at an official DriveTest Centre and consists of 40 multiple-choice questions split into two sections:

Requirements for Taking the Ontario G1 Test

Before applying, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Pass a vision test

  • Provide valid identification such as:

    • Passport or Canadian citizenship card

    • PR card or immigration papers

    • Proof of Ontario residence

What Happens After You Pass?

Once you pass the written G1 test:

  1. You’ll receive your G1 license, allowing you to practice driving with a fully licensed supervisor.

  2. Hold your G1 for at least 12 months.

  3. Take the G2 road test to progress.

  4. After holding your G2 for another 12 months, you can take the G (full license) test.
